Toughened Glass Shop Fronts That Showcase Your Business
Crystal-clear visibility, five times the strength of standard glass, and a sleek modern look that draws customers in. We design, manufacture and install toughened glass shop fronts for businesses across the UK — frameless, framed or structural glazing.

What Are Toughened Glass Shop Fronts?
Toughened glass — also called tempered glass — is standard float glass that has been heated to around 620°C and then rapidly cooled. This thermal process makes it up to five times stronger than ordinary annealed glass and changes the way it breaks: into small, blunt, pebble-like pieces rather than jagged shards.
For shop fronts, this means a material that handles daily knocks, temperature swings and even attempted break-ins far better than standard glazing. Toughened glass is the baseline requirement for all commercial frontages under UK building regulations, and the standard thickness for shopfront panels is 10mm or 12mm.
We use toughened glass in frameless, framed and structural glazing configurations. Curious which type of glass suits your business? Read our guide on choosing the best glass for shop fronts.
Why Businesses Choose Toughened Glass
Maximum visibility, serious strength, and a look that says premium. Here’s what makes toughened glass the top choice for modern shop fronts.
Serious Strength, Serious Safety
Toughened glass withstands impacts that would shatter ordinary glazing. If it does break, it crumbles into small blunt pieces — no jagged shards, no serious injury risk. That’s why UK building regulations require it in all commercial shopfronts.
Total Product Visibility
No frames blocking the view, no visual clutter. Toughened glass gives your products and interior 100% visibility from the street. For retailers, that means more passing trade converting into footfall.
Floods Your Space with Natural Light
Large glass panels let daylight deep into your premises, reducing your reliance on artificial lighting during trading hours. Customers notice the bright, welcoming atmosphere — and your electricity bill notices too.
Vandal & Impact Resistant
Withstands accidental impacts, attempted break-ins and everyday wear. Add laminated toughened glass for anti-bandit protection.
Low Maintenance
Warm soapy water and a cloth. That’s it. No painting, no sealing, no rust treatment. Glass doesn’t degrade, discolour or lose strength.
Weather & UV Resistant
Toughened glass handles temperature swings, UV exposure and driving rain without degrading. No warping, no fading, no rot.

Types of Toughened Glass Shop Front
From frameless minimalist designs to structural glazing systems, we build toughened glass shop fronts for every type of commercial premises.
Frameless Toughened Glass
No visible frame — just clean, uninterrupted glass held by patch fittings or top and bottom rails. Uses 10–12mm toughened glass. The most popular choice for salons, boutiques and restaurants that want a sleek, high-end look with total product visibility.
Toughened Glass with Aluminium Frames
Glass panels set within slim aluminium profiles for added structural support. Available in any RAL colour. Ideal for larger shopfronts where frameless designs would be structurally impractical, or where you want the security of a framed system.
Structural Glazing Systems
Bolted or planar glazing using specialist connectors to create a completely flush external facade. Glass is fixed with stainless steel point fixings through drilled holes. Used for prestigious commercial projects, showrooms and corporate offices where visual impact matters most.
We also supply curved glass, laminated toughened glass, fire-rated glass, frosted and tinted options, and double-glazed toughened units. Not sure which type suits your project? We’ll recommend the right specification during your free site survey.

UK Building Regulations & Glazing Standards
Every toughened glass shop front we install meets or exceeds current UK building regulations. Here are the standards that matter.
BS EN 12150-1:2015 — Toughened Glass
The primary European standard for thermally toughened soda lime silicate safety glass. All our toughened glass carries a permanent BS EN 12150 mark confirming compliance.
BS EN 12600:2002 — Impact Classification
The pendulum impact test standard that classifies glass behaviour under impact. Shopfront glass is typically rated 1(C)1 or 2(C)2 — confirming safe breakage patterns under impact.
Approved Document K — Glazing Safety
Section 5 covers protection against impact with glazing. All glass from floor to 1500mm height is a “critical location” requiring safety glass. This replaced the older Part N requirements.
Safety Glass Marking Requirements
All safety glass must carry a permanent, visible marking showing the relevant British Standard after installation. We ensure every panel is correctly marked and certifiable.
DDA Compliance — Accessibility
Door widths meet the minimum 1000mm clear opening requirement. Manifestation markings on glass panels ensure the glazing is visible to partially sighted visitors.
FENSA Registered Installation
Every installation is automatically notified to Building Control. You receive a FENSA certificate as proof of compliance — essential if you sell or lease the property.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about toughened glass shop fronts, answered by our team.
Toughened glass shop fronts use thermally treated safety glass that is up to five times stronger than standard annealed glass. The glass is heated to around 620°C then rapidly cooled, creating internal compression that gives it superior strength. If it breaks, it shatters into small, blunt pieces rather than dangerous shards. Toughened glass is also known as tempered glass — they are the same product.
Toughened glass shop fronts typically cost between £2,500 and £10,000+ fully installed. Framed designs with aluminium profiles start from around £2,500. Frameless designs with patch fittings start from £3,000. Structural glazing systems for larger commercial projects start from £5,000+. Exact pricing depends on size, glass specification, hardware and site conditions. We provide free site surveys and fixed-price quotes. See our shop front cost guide for more detail.
Yes. Toughened glass is five times stronger than standard glass and resists impact well. For higher security, we specify laminated toughened glass which holds together when struck, preventing entry even if the glass cracks. Additional options include anti-bandit film, multi-point locking, alarm integration and roller shutters for overnight protection.
Standard toughened glass for shop fronts is 10mm or 12mm thick. 10mm suits most framed shopfront panels. 12mm is recommended for frameless installations and larger panels. Laminated toughened glass ranges from 6.4mm to 25mm+ for anti-bandit specifications.
Toughened glass is heat-treated for strength and shatters into small blunt pieces when broken. Laminated glass consists of layers bonded with a PVB interlayer — when broken, the fragments stick to the interlayer. Laminated toughened glass combines both: the strength of toughening with the retention of lamination. For shopfronts, toughened is standard; laminated toughened is recommended for high-security premises.
A straightforward like-for-like replacement doesn’t usually require planning permission. If you’re changing size, shape or style, or if the property is in a conservation area or listed building, you’ll likely need approval. Changing the use class may also trigger requirements. We advise on this during your free site survey.
A well-installed toughened glass shop front will last 20 to 25 years or more. The glass itself doesn’t degrade, discolour or lose strength. Hardware like hinges, floor springs and locks may need servicing during this period.
Yes. Options include clear, frosted, tinted, low-iron and digitally printed glass. Hardware finishes range from chrome and brushed stainless steel to satin and powder-coated colours. Door types include hinged, pivot, sliding and automatic. Every element can be tailored to your brand.
Very little maintenance is needed. Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners. Check hinges, floor springs and locks every six months and lubricate with silicone spray. Inspect seals annually and replace if worn.
Single-pane toughened glass has moderate thermal performance. For improved efficiency, we recommend double-glazed toughened units with argon gas filling and Low-E coatings, achieving U-values of 1.1 W/m²K or better — a real difference to your energy bills.
Yes. Toughened and tempered glass are the same product. “Toughened” is the UK/European term; “tempered” is more common in North America. Both refer to glass that has been heat-treated to increase strength and alter its breakage pattern.
It shatters into small, blunt, roughly cube-shaped pieces rather than the large jagged shards produced by standard glass. This is a key safety feature — the small pieces are far less likely to cause serious injury. Laminated toughened glass goes further: the broken pieces remain bonded to the interlayer and don’t fall out.
Key regulations include BS EN 12150-1:2015 (toughened glass standard), BS EN 12600:2002 (impact classification), and Approved Document K (glazing safety in buildings). All glass in “critical locations” — from floor to 1500mm — must be safety glass with a visible permanent mark. Our installations comply with all applicable standards.
On-site installation typically takes 1 to 3 days depending on size and complexity. Manufacturing lead time is 2–4 weeks from sign-off. The total timeline from enquiry to completion is usually 4–6 weeks.
Yes. Based in London, we install across the whole UK — Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Bristol, Glasgow, Newcastle and everywhere in between. Same project management and quality regardless of location.
